Mother's Daughter (Thank you for the title Miley Cyrus) I wasn't sure why this painting that I started when Izzy was a Sophomore in High School and SUPER FUN (note the blurry hand gesture on the left side) was more appealing to me than some of the other portraits that I have done lately, and today during my art lesson from my new teacher, Sherrie McGraw, I had an aha moment! Sherrie says that by giving your portraits space around the head gives more of a sense that the subject is real, that space invites the readers gaze into the canvas in a more seductive way, like the difference between a shout and a whisper. And now I see it... Mother's Daughter is a whisper. It's an angsty, rebellious, teen during covid, cellphone pop culture whisper. and I like it because it feels real. The painting is almost finished, I still need to add a shadow behind her back to represent a chair, but that's it. This piece will be a part of my HighWomen Series.
