It takes me twice as long as it should to get to the studio these days cause I stop every three minutes in total awe of the view. I'm always looking for the perfect photo to paint. Today was exceptionally beautiful with all the reds, oranges, blues, and the different shades of purple everywhere, even the clouds are periwinkle this week. Fall is such a magical time of year where for a moment we are able to embrace the luscious plunder of summer and meditate for a brief moment on the cycles of life. If you're in Montana fall means that hunting season begins, the snow is coming, and if you haven't harvested your produce, you better start soon, and beauty everywhere. In our house, Fall is the smell of Apple Cider brewing in the roaster, long weekends rolling in tall grass with the dogs, bright orange early morning hunts with dad, and a slow acceptance that the pace is about to change. And for all this we are thankful.

Mother's Daughter (Thank you for the title Miley Cyrus) I wasn't sure why this painting that I started when Izzy was a Sophomore in High School and SUPER FUN (note the blurry hand gesture on the left side) was more appealing to me than some of the other portraits that I have done lately, and today during my art lesson from my new teacher, Sherrie McGraw, I had an aha moment! Sherrie says that by giving your portraits space around the head gives more of a sense that the subject is real, that space invites the readers gaze into the canvas in a more seductive way, like the difference between a shout and a whisper. And now I see it... Mother's Daughter is a whisper. It's an angsty, rebellious, teen during covid, cellphone pop culture whisper. and I like it because it feels real. The painting is almost finished, I still need to add a shadow behind her back to represent a chair, but that's it. This piece will be a part of my HighWomen Series. |
